Triumph has ripped the covers off two new models that will be added to its modern classic lineup with the Speed 400 roadster and Scrambler 400 X taking pride of place alongside the Speed Twin 900 and 1200.
Designed from the ground up with a brand-new single-engine platform at their heart, according to Triumph the two new models are designed to deliver a fun, agile and confidence-inspiring ride for riders of all ages and experience levels
Conceived and designed in Hinckley, UK, the two new additions to the modern classics line feature an all-new fuel-injected and liquid-cooled 398cc single-cylinder engine punching out a respectable 29.4kW of power at 8,000rpm and 37.5 Nm of torque at 6,500rpm.
Technical highlights of the new donk include a four-valve, DOHC cylinder head and a crankshaft and finger-follower valvetrain with low reciprocating mass and DLC coatings that reduce friction contributing to what is claimed to be a free-revving yet tractable engine. Power is channelled to the back wheel via a six-speed gearbox with chain final drive.
The Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X sport an accessible seat height of 790mm and 835mm respectively and a low weight of 170kg and 179kg.
Both models feature an all-new frame, with bolt-on rear subframe and cast-aluminium swingarm.
The Speed 400 features 43mm big-piston upside-down front forks, and mono-shock rear suspension, with an external reservoir.
Braking duties are handled by four-piston radial front brakes with a 300mm front disc and braided lines.
The Scrambler 400 X features a longer wheelbase, longer travel suspension, larger 19-inch front wheel rather the 17inch wheels on the Speed 400, and a wide handlebar for greater stability and control when riding on loose surfaces, as well as providing a more upright and commanding riding position. A larger cast steel brake pedal and high-grip foot pegs that are positioned lower and wider also make for a more natural standing riding position when riding off-road, while a larger 320mm front brake disc and optimised pad compound that provides more progressive braking performance in all conditions.
A Bosch engine management system offers a ride-by-wire throttle, switchable traction control, and dual-channel ABS with switchable ABS on the Scrambler 400 X.
The dual format instruments feature a large analogue speedometer and integrated LCD screen which includes a digital tachometer, a fuel range remaining and a gear position indicator. Both models also feature a USB-C charging socket
Both the Speed 400 and the Scrambler 400 X come equipped with a steering lock and an anti-theft immobiliser as standard, with a transponder chip integrated into the ignition key that ensures that only the owner will be riding away with a new Triumph.
The new single-cylinder machines have class-leading 16,000km service intervals, and a two-year unlimited mileage warranty.
The Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X are expected to arrive on Australian showroom floors in December 2023 with pricing to be announced closer to the release date.
