A new patent suggests that Honda is serious about putting the Grom 50 Scrambler into production in the near future.

At last year’s Tokyo Motor Show, Honda showed a pair of downsized, 50cc Grom Scrambler concepts – the imaginatively-named ‘Concept-One’ and ‘Concept-Two’ machines. Both shared elements of the existing 125cc Grom allied to a smaller, 50cc engine and retro scrambler styling.

Now one of the bikes, ‘Concept-One’ has had its styling patented in both Japan and China, hinting that the firm might be serious about putting it into production. Of the two concepts, it was the more traditional-looking scrambler and the one that appeared to be closest to viable for production.

Although the new patent images don’t reveal any details that weren’t on the concept bike, Honda’s decision to commercially protect the design – particularly in China, where copying is rife – can be interpreted as a suggestion that the bike has a production future.
