While Honda is playing a waiting game until mid-season on a 2018 factory contract extension with Jack Miller, the Australian is relaxed about his MotoGP future. Miller says he “has options” if HRC does not renew his contract for 2018 and AMCN has learned one of those options could be with Ducati.
Informal talks have taken place and it is known that Ducati operatives have enquired about Miller’s contractual availability and interest. Miller’s age, 22, and his talent, marks him as a rider of interest to team bosses assessing the market.
One scenario could be for Miller to ride with Pramac Ducati next year, and he could certainly do worse than showcasing his talents there to be considered for the factory team in 2019.
Both Pramac spots are up for grabs in 2018, although Danilo Petrucci’s impressive podium in the Italian GP should all but guarantee him a new deal.
Neither Pramac nor Ducati Corse would be drawn on their plans, though Ducati’s Sporting Directing Paolo Ciabatti told AMCN: “Jack Miller is one of the young riders we keep an eye on but not the only one. He has made progress over the past year to be a more competitive rider and we like the way he rides, he is very aggressive.”
Miller also has a standing offer from his current MarcVDS team for a 2018 contract if Honda passes on his services. But Miller desires a factory gig in 2019 and he is not the only Honda rider currently wrestling with a less than precise RC213V.
“Perhaps my riding style would suit a Ducati,” was Miller’s only comment.
