John McPhee had a tough Saturday at the Czech GP, ending up P19 on the grid – but the story was far from over. Staging a great comeback on Sunday, the Scot moved through the field to just behind the podium group, crossing the line in sixth. Now it’s time for the Austrian GP, and a very different challenge to Brno.
The Red Bull Ring is 4.3km long, with three left- and seven right-handed corners. It’s a venue characterised by hard braking and acceleration, but the longest straight is 626m. Set in the spectacular Styrian Alps in Spielberg, the venue is one of the most breathtaking of the year.
Starting almost from scratch after only one previous visit to the track, McPhee is eager to get back out there; now having moved up to fourth in the Championship following the Czech GP. The mission is on to repeat the solid points haul taken last time out – and to keep the momentum rolling.
John McPhee: “On race day in Brno we made a good step forward, and had a strong comeback from qualifying nineteenth to coming home sixth. I’m really excited to keep the form strong going into Free Practice tomorrow. This track is very different to Brno – and one that we’ve not done many laps on – but I’m really looking forward to getting back out there.”
