Yamaha Racing Team rider Wayne Maxwell (Yamaha Motors) was unbeatable in the wet and dry at today’s third round of the Australian Superbike Championship held at Sydney Motorsport Park.
Maxwell began the weekend by claiming the bonus championship point with the fastest time in Saturday’s Superpole (1m30.293s).
Maxwell’s victory in race one came after a race-long duel with Yamaha teammate Glenn Allerton (Yamaha Motors), with just .291s after 12 laps of intense racing. Mike Jones (Ducati Australia / Motul / Pirelli / QBE / Australian Outdoor Living) finished third.
By the time the afternoon’s race two rolled around, steady rain had begun to fall sending teams scrambling for wet weather tyres.
With a lengthy run of dry-weather racing, the field appeared tentative on the wet surface during the warm up laps, however once the start lights went out Maxwell burst to the lead and quickly built a healthy buffer over Allerton that would grow to 14 seconds by race ends.
As he did in race 1, Mike Jones came home in third position.
Allerton’s two second place finishes were enough to push him back into the lead of the championship ahead of Maxwell (133 to 131), with Herfoss in third on 125 points.
