1. Engine The 999cc four-cylinder engine derived from the GSX-R1000 K5 now features ventilation holes between the pistons on the upper crankcase, which help reduce pumping loss and increase power and torque. Power output has increased from 107kW to 110kW, and torque from 106Nm to 108Nm.
2. Traction control system The three-level (plus off) traction control system checks the front and rear wheel speeds, throttle position sensor, crank position sensor and gear position sensor 250 times per second. The TC system works by controlling the ignition timing via the ECU. Whenever wheelspin is detected, the system gently reduces the engine’s power output until traction is regained.
3. New slipper clutch A back-torque-limiting clutch has been added for 2018. More commonly referred to as a slipper clutch, it allows for smoother downshifts through the six-speed gearbox when braking and setting up for corner entry, reducing the chance of rear-end hop. The new system also provides a lighter clutch, with less effort required at the lever.
4. Better brakes Stiffer brake hoses have been installed to reduce pressure loss caused by hose expansion. The result is more power and better feedback at the brake lever from the radial-mount Brembo monobloc brakes.
5. All black The GSX-S1000Z has a matte-black colour scheme – including blacked-out footpegs, brake and gear levers. The matte-black sets it apart from the standard GSX-S1000. Technically the two models are identical.
6. Euro 4 compliant The stubby exhaust system lets out a joyous wailing sound above 5000rpm. Despite its diminutive size, it houses a catalyser in the exhaust chamber big enough to keep emissions below the strict Euro 4 regulations.
