Motorcycle activist Greg Hirst passed away unexpectedly on 6 June following complications from surgery. He was 64.
Hirsty, as he was known to most, was a fierce advocate of motorcycling and spent a life lobbying for, and on many occasions achieving, improved and safer conditions for the motorcycle riding community.
He was a founding member of the Brotherhood Christian Motorcycle Club, who he rode with for more than 40 years, and instigated the successful Silverwater Motor Festival, which incorporated the annual Custom and Street Motorcycle Show. He was also the man behind the popular Bathurst Bike Show, currently in its eighth year.
He was a founding member of the Christian Motorcyclists Association in 1979, worked tirelessly to improve the conditions for Australia’s homeless, contributed to various print publications and self-published two books, parts one and two of My Motorcycling Life.
Perhaps Hirsty’s most publicised achievement was hosting the successful television series Temporary Australians together with radio personality Brendan Jones. The show is currently into its fifth series.
Hirst’s funeral was held on Monday 19 June in Sydney, and was followed by a processional ride. He is survived by his wife
of 37 years, Colleen, and five of their children. AMCN extends its condolences.
