As part of Indian’s move towards a sportier image – one that perhaps better reflects the company’s pre-war origins when it was a force to be reckoned with on track – Indian will be racing in American Flat Track in 2017.
It revealed its race-only Scout FTR750 late last year (see Vol 66 No 12), using a bespoke 81kW V-twin engine in a steel frame wrapped in carbon bodywork.
As well as announcing its works line-up of racers, the firm has now revealed that it will sell customer versions of the FTR750, albeit with a hefty price tag. It’s a clear signal of intent to American rival Harley-Davidson, which is Indian’s main competitor in the flat track series and recently made its race-only XG750R available for purchase.
You’ll need to part with US$49,900 to get your hands on Indian’s flat-tracker – that’s a whopping A$66,500 – and Indian is very clear it’s a race-only machine that’s not to be used on the road. However, it’s easy to imagine that the engine could eventually spawn a production derivative to fill the desire for a smaller-capacity, sporty Indian model.
In the meantime, who’s keen for a comparo of a couple of American-built production flat-track racers?
