Despite finishing off the podium at round two of the Australian Superbike Championship at Wakefield Park, South Australian based Daniel Falzon continues to lead the championship on his YRT / JD Racing team Yamaha R1.
On a weekend that threw all kinds of weather at the competitors and on a track that Falzon admits he has struggled on, the 23 year still managed to put together a solid weekend of racing finishing with 9-3 results and claim fifth place for the round.
Race one saw Falzon, like many of his competitors, start on wet tyres but the racing surface was completely dry after the opening laps so Falzon made the decision to pull into pit lane and jump onto his spare bike that was set up for dry conditions.
He was then able to re-join the race and begin his charge back through the field, landing him in ninth place.
The second race was much smoother with Falzon taking third place in a crash shortened race and was satisfied with his weekend’s work.
“We went in to this weekend with the mindset of gathering as many points as possible and staying upright as this is a difficult track for us,” said Falzon. “We managed to finish on the podium in race two and most of all maintain our championship lead.”
Considering Wakefield Park is classed as a ‘bogey’ track for Falzon, his times were still very impressive.
“It just goes to show just how strong the Yamaha R1 really is, as we we’re able to run up the front on a track which I enjoy, but never been particularly fast. Of course it’s a team effort as well, our team made no mistakes and there were minimal incidents on the track by me. So all in all, a very positive outcome! Bring on Winton,” concluded the South Australian rider.
Round three of the ASBK will be at Winton Raceway in Victoria on 28-30 April.
